Burcu Alkan

She was born in İstanbul, in 1980. She graduated from the Department of English Language Teaching at Istanbul University, Hasan Ali Yücel Education Faculty, in 2002. The same year she began her postgraduate studies at California State University, Chico in the field of literature. In 2004, she received her MA in English with a Comparative Literature thesis. Couple of months after her graduation, she moved to Manchester to do her PhD under the supervision of Terry Eagleton. She completed her degree in literary and cultural studies with a focus on cultural theory and Turkish literature in 2009. When she returned Turkey the same year, she began teaching at the English Department of Celal Bayar University in Manisa.

In 2012, she moved back to Istanbul and took up her position at the American Culture and Literature programme of Bahçeşehir University, where she currently works. She teaches courses on 19th & 20th century literatures, literary and cultural theory, and comparative literature. In addition to her academic work, she does literary translations and editing. Her essays, articles and translations have been published in various literary journals and periodicals.

Dr Alkan recently co-edited Dictionary of Literary Biography 373: Turkish Novelists Since 1960 (New York: Gale, 2013) with Çimen Günay-Erkol, in which she also wrote the biographic entries for the novelists Attilâ İlhan and Nedim Gürsel.
