Her full name is Halide Eşber Ç. Güvenç. She was born on 28 February 1965, in Bandırma as the daughter of officer İnci Eşber and pilot Colonel Yıldıray Çelik. After graduating from Çamlıca Girls’ High School, she started her undergraduate education in the Department of Classical Philology, in the Faculty of Literature, Istanbul University. Starting from 1984, she attended to the Bilsak Theatre Workshop. She worked on design and puppets with the sculptor Saim Bugay. She worked as a scriptwriter assistant in Enis Rıza’s team. She continued her acting education with a scholarship in Liverpool John Moores-Hope Street Actors’ Center. Since 1985, she worked in various television series as an actor, scriptwriter and assistant. Her articles were published in Milliyet Sanat, The Journal of Theatre and Cumhuriyet Book Supplement. She wrote radio plays for TRT Istanbul Radio. She prepared and presented the radio programme “Open Journal” on Açık Radyo. She lives in Istanbul. She is married and mother of a daughter, Derin.
Her first poem was published in Öğrenci Yazıları, when she was a student in middle school. She published her stories mostly in the journal, Adam Öykü. She claimed the third prize for Bu Publishing House Young Adult Novels with her first book Loneliness. In 2001 As If We Hadn’t Made Love So Madly For A Long Time was published. This novel has been regarded as an “effective narrative” by Ömer Türkeş. In the same year, her stories collection, Besom was published. In 2003 she published another story book, Look At the Light When You Tell. Her novel, Everything Is With You was published in 2005.
In her texts, Halide uses a shattered language. While her stories create a novel when read altogether, her novels part into pieces and form separate stories. Therefore, her language and writing style are the most powerful characteristics of her texts. As If We Hadn’t Made
Love So Madly For A Long Time is one of the examples of her writing style, in which every word of the title is also the name of a story in the book. The main sentence of her book, Everything Is With You, exemplifies her unique usage of language: “Everything is beginning /
ending / beautiful / meaningful / just with you” Her stories and novels revolve around relationships. Everything Is With You portrays
the struggle of a woman, Çiğdem who builds her identity around her marriage as “Sinan’s wife”. While infidelity, the worries of raising children, the sibling rivalry, self-sacrificing of the mother, the absence of the father are the main themes of the story, the language and plot of the story ar shattered following Çiğdem’s inner shattering. Her usage of stream of consciousness portrays the chaos of human mind. As If We Hadn’t Made Love So Madly For A Long Time depicts two women’s love for the same man. The novel shows the external pressures the two women have to fight against regardless of their different social and economic backgrounds. Violence is one of the main themes of the plot. The novel portrays the change of Seyfi, the hero of the book who is traumatised by violence, sexual abuse and poverty, from the victim to the tyrant. Eşber’s depiction of the space, is also highly important for her texts. The neighbourhood of As If We Hadn’t Made Love So Madly For A Long Time reflects the dimness, depression and the darkness of the story. The constant surveillance of women by the neighbourhood demonstrates the multifaceted violence.
In her Besom, Eşber continues to play with the words, plot and language. The book contains tree parts: Introduction, developing and conclusion. While introduction and conclusion are highly autobiographical, the developing part has sixteen fictional stories, revolve around one theme: poverty.
