Işıl Özgentürk (b. 1948) She was born in 19 September 1948 in Gaziantep. Her actual name is Zeynep Işıl Türkben. She went to primary and middle school in Gaziantep and high school in Çamlıca Kız Lisesi. She graduated from İstanbul University, Faculty of Economics. She founded Devrim İçin Hareket Theatre with Ali Özgentürk and Mehmet Ulusoy in 1968 and worked as a writer and an actor in this group until 1971. She worked as a writer, director and producer in theatre, cinema and radio.

She began her writing career with children's literature. She received an award at a competition organized by Arkın Publishing House. İstanbul Şehir Tiyatroları staged her plays for children; in 1975 Keloğlan’ın Tembelliği and in 1977 Dünyayı Tanıyorum. Her stories and interviews were published in Cumhuriyet newspaper between the years 1977-1980. Also her articles have been published in magazines such as, Milliyet Sanat, Gösteri, Yeni Düşün and Broy. Her books, Yokuşu Tırmanır Hayat and Kuş Ne Yana Öter were banned after the military coup of September 12.

She attended many events as a speaker. She took place in the “Beşi Bir Yerde” project, which is carried out by ODTÜ Geliştirme Vakfı with students, teachers and writers. She also has several successful films, of which she had written the screenplays and/or directed. Among these “Seni Seviyorum Rosa,” which was adapted from the novel Tante Rosa written by Sevgi Soysal, and “At,” which she made with Ali Özgentürk, received awards in many festivals, such as Ankara Film Festival and Antalya Golden Orange.

The author, who is a board member of TYS, still lives in Istanbul. She has been writing for the Cumhuriyet newspaper since 1997. She also holds workshops and gives seminars at different institutions. She organizes activities through her film workshop, through which she cooperates with the Kadikoy Municipality. She produced the “Dürbünümde İstanbul” project as a part of the 2010 İstanbul European Culture Capital.
