Muazzez Tahsin Berkand (1899-1984)

Her real name is Muazzez Meryem. Muazzez Tahsin was born in Salonika 1899 as the daughter of Avukat (Lawyer) Tahsin and Ayşe Hanım. In 1912, after the Balkan Wars, the whole family immigrated to Istanbul.

By taking private lessons, she learnt French and English. After completing İstanbul Feyziye High School, she studied at the school of French priestess, Saeurs d‟Assomption in Kumkapı. Then she completed the Training School for Girls. She worked as a French and English teacher for a while at Kasımpaşa Numune and Üsküdar Refet Kadın. Muazzez Tahsin went to Syria with her sister Nakiye Hanım in 1917 to work for the schools founded by Halide Edip Adıvar, who she deeply admired (Özçelik 44). She taught Turkish for two years in Beyrut High School for Girls (Beyrut Kız Sultanisi) and the Teacher‟s High School (Darülmuallimati). Returning to İstanbul after the end of the War of Independence, Berkand gave Ethic and French courses in Şişli Terakki High School for several years. Leaving her profession between the years 1925-1929, she began working as a translator in National Auto Company. She also worked at the Ottoman Bank, the Department of the Legal Affairs as a translator and typist-secretary from 1929 to 1956. She never married. She died in İstanbul on 4 October 1984.

Her first novel Sen ve Ben was published in 1923. Muazzez Tahsin, renown as an author of popular romance, penned twenty novels, twenty one adaptations and a story collection. Her novels were published in journals such as Akşam, Cumhuriyet, Son Posta as serials. Also, she translated works such as Ateşli Kalb by Magali (1939), Safo by A. Daudet (1940), Jezabel/İhtiyarlamayan Kadın by Irene Nemirovsky (1943), Hemşireler by A.J. Cronin (republished with the name of Nöbetçi Hemşire in 1957), Evleniyorum by J. Foldes (1945) into Turkish.

Ömer Türkeş states in his article “Aşkolsun” that the novels of Muazzez Tahsin Berkand, Saadet Güneşi and Kıvılcım ve Ateş could be regarded as the type of effort and wish to contribute to the construction of women that the ideology of the Republic wants to create and that they are nearly equal to the man with their portrayal of trustworthy, honest, and loyal girls and women.
